最近有好几个朋友都成功申请到了美国金融工程硕士录取,而且不止一个AD,赞,问到如何选择项目的问题,于是产生了此贴。

MFE - University of California, Berkeleyhttp://mfe.haas.berkeley.edu/

Positives

•   Housed in the Haas Business school which promotes the MFE program
•   More business oriented perspective
•   Balanced program instead of being math or computation focused
•   Tailored FE program is helpful to students with non-finance background
•   Excellent reputation in NYC
•   Strong alumni network and the UCB brand name
•   1 year program, march-march session
•   program fee ~ $47,000 (partial internship offset + lower living costs)

Other Features

•   Location – west coast (Away from the financial hub of NYC)
•   Bigger class size (60) – Director plays an important role in placements to offset locational disadvantage
•   Sponsoring this course is made easier by Haas: loans are available to even international students without any credit requirements.

Best suited for:
•   Mid-career professionals with some prior work exprerience (relevant preferred)/PhDs/Fresh graduates with steller academic records and some exposure to the industry. The average entrant age is 29 years.


MSCF – Carnegie Mellon University, New York/Pittsburgh

Positives

•   Excellent placement services, Housed in the Tepper Business school
•   Business perspective
•   Computational finance focused
•   Tailored FE program is helpful to students with non-finance background
•   Excellent reputation in NYC
•   Manageable class size split (35+35)
•   Strong alumni network
•   Special Networking opportunities for NYC campus
•   Financial aid/waiver available for some

Other Features

•   Program fee ~ $63,000 (partial internship offset + aid/schol for some)
•   1.5 year program, September to January session
•   Limited access to professors (NYC Campus)

Best suited for:
•   Mid-career professionals with some prior work exprerience (relevant preferred)/Fresh graduates with steller academic records



MSMF – New York University

Positives

•   NYC placement (100% record)
•   Excellent reputation of the Mathematics dept (Great names)
•   Structured curriculum as opposed to wide range of electives
•   Mathematics focused yet practical
•   Excellent reputation in NYC
•   Small class size (30)

Other Features

•   Program fee ~ $45,000 (internship offset but Higher NYC living costs)
•   Lesser university brand name worldwide than some of the ivy’s
•   1.5 year program, September to January session

Best suited for:
•   Freshers with excellent mathematical background/Professionals with 1-2 years of experience


MSFM – Stanford University

Positives

•   Reputation of Stanford and GSB world over
•   Exclusivity (hard to get into)
•   Great range of electives/flexibility
•   Program fee ~ $35,000 (Internship + Lowest total expenses + Lower living costs)
•   Small class size (25)
•   Flexible duration, 9 months – 1.5 years

Other Features

•   Location – west coast
•   Very Mathematically rigorous
•   Program not evolved fully, sailing on Stanford brand

Best suited for:
•   Freshers with excellent mathematical background/Professionals with 1-2 years of experience


MFin – Princeton University
Positives

•   Reputed as the best Masters in Finance program (not FE)
•   Exclusivity (very hard to get into)
•   Greatest range of electives/flexibility including FE and Asset Management tracks
•   Employment opportunities in IBD (Corp Fin) as well as Quant Finance
•   Stress on economics
•   Program fee ~ $35,000 per year (Internship + Lower living costs)
•   Smallest class size (25)

Other Features

•   Duration maybe 1 or 2 years (depends on the admissions committee)
•   Theoretical focus
•   Program not evolved fully, sailing on Princeton brand

Best suited for:
•   Freshers with excellent mathematical background/Mid career professionals with 1-5 years of experience

Masters in Quantitative and Computational Finance, Georgia Institute of Technology

Program Features:
1. Interdisciplinary program managed by College of Management, School of Mathematics and School of Industrial and Systems Engineering.
2. 3 semester program with an intake of approximately 20 students.
3. Program fees: $26000 per academic year. Cost of attendence: $37000 per academic year.
4. Both GRE and GMAT scores acceptable (College of Management accepts GMAT scores).

Strengths:
1. Small class size and good quality of education.
2. Cheaper than most of the tier I MFE programs. Decent number of scholarships available. Most of the students get MSQCF scholarships or RAships.
3. Run by a highly reputed university.

Weaknesses:
1. GaTech is not well reputed on Wall Street, inspite of its engineering reputation.
2. Placement support is not very encouraging, especially for the internship positions.
3. Location disadvantage

Best Suited for:
University freshers/professionals with 1-3 years of experience.


Masters in Financial Engineering, Cornell University

Program Features:
1. 3 semester program (but can be completed in 2 semesters) offered by School of Operation Research and Industrial Engineering
2. Batch strength of approximately 30.
3. Program fees: $33000 per academic year.
4. Financial Engineering is one of the concentrations of M.Eng. program in Operations Reseach and Industrial Engineering.

Strengths:
1. Small class size and good quality of education.
2. Located in Ithaca, 3-4 hours drive from NYC.
3. Run by a highly reputed university with a decent brand name at Wall Street.

Weaknesses:
1. It's not a full fledged Financial Engineering program. It's a M.Eng. in ORandIE with specialization in Financial Engineering.
2. Placement services are not agressive as compared to programs run by B-Schools (read UCB and CMU), especially for the internship positions.
3. Rare financial support in the form of tution waivers. Some RAships are available, but donot include tution waivers.  

Best Suited for:
University freshers/professionals with 1-3 years of experience.


MS Finance/MS Financial Markets/MS Mathematical Finance at Illinois Institute of Technology

Program Features:
1. All 3 programs are run by Stuart School of Business. MS Mathematical Finance collaborates with Dept. of Mathematics.
2. 2 semester program with an intake of approximately 80 (?) students.
3. Program fees: $32000 (14-16 courses)
4. Both GRE and GMAT scores acceptable (College of Management accepts GMAT scores).

Strengths:
1. Locational advantage. Chicago is second to NYC.
2. Tution waivers upto 50-60% are offered.
3. Appear as structured programs run by Stuart.  

Weaknesses:
1. IIT is not a very reputed brand as a university.
2. Appear to have very little selectivity in offering admissions.
3. Not very highly rated faculty.
4. Very high number of international students
5. Placement statistics not very encouraging.

Best Suited for:
University freshers/professionals with 1-2 years of experience looking for securing atleast one admission offer.


Financial Mathematics at University of Chicago

Program Features:
1. 1 year math-intensive program, run by the department of Mathematics.  
2. Class size of approximately 35.
3. Program fees: $40,000 for 1 year

Strengths:
1. Locational advantage. Chicago is second to NYC.
2. Some of the electives can be taken at Chicago GSB, which is highly rated.
3. Small batch size and qualified faculty.

Weaknesses:
1. Requirement of GRE Mathematics subject test. This requirement is waived in some cases based on previous background of the applicant.
2. Costly program with no financial aid.
3. Internship and placement support not very aggressive (compared to MFEs at CMU and UCB).

Best Suited for:
University freshers/professionals with 1-2 years of experience looking for a mathematically intensive Financial Engineering degree.  


Masters in Financial Engineering (Baruch College, City University New York)

Program Features:
1. Emerging program with an active program director and student body.
2. 3 semester program (12 courses) with an intake of approximately 30 students (Selection rate: 23%).
3. Program fees: $18000 for 12 courses (for international/out-of-state students) and $10000 for in-state students.

Strengths:
1. Small class size and flexible course timings for part-time students.
2. One of the cheapest MFE programs.
3. Location advantage. Situated in NYC

Weaknesses:
1. CUNY is not a very well reputed university overall. Not a big name in this brand-savvy industry of investment banking.
2. Not very highly rated faculty.

Best Suited for:
University freshers/professionals with 1-3 years of experience/part-timers working in NYC.
